27 | Nyssa - Using a Private Midwife in the Public System, Assisted Vaginal Birth, The Golden Month & the Importance of Processing & Talking About our Birthing Experiences
In this episode I speak to Nyssa and she’s sharing her birth story from Melbourne, Australia with her daughter. Nyssa and her partner chose to hire a private midwife and still go for a hospital birth within the public system and they had a very good experience. We talk about wishes for birth and how important it is to give consent and to be able to debrief the experiences that we have. Nyssa gave birth to her daughter with a bit of assistance, including epidural and forceps and she had an episiotomy and she shares how it felt in the moment and how it has been to process her birth experiences afterwards.
We have a discussion about postpartum maternal health and the golden month and I have a feeling we might get back to more on this topic in a later episode as we are both quite passionate about maternal health.
Nyssa really recommends reading The Golden Month by Jenny Allison, and Birthing with Confidence by Rhea Dempsey. Her partner especially found the chapter about pain during childbirth helpful to be able to support Nyssa. She also really recommends listening to other parents birth stories.
